Quicksilver actor Evan Peters is apparently not finished with fast-paced roles just yet. Peters, it has been confirmed by reliable sources, will play the lead role in the upcoming film Tron 3, also known as Tron: Ares. Jared Leto plays the major part, and while Peters’ specific role has not been revealed, it is thought to be substantial.

Since it was announced in January that Joachim Rnning, director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, will be helming Tron: Ares, this is the first substantial update regarding the film. Jesse Wigutow, best known for his work on It Runs in the Family, penned the screenplay for this film. Deadline has learned that filming for the sequel will begin in August in Vancouver.

Besides Jared Leto, Evan Peters is the only other cast member who has been officially announced. Since Tron: Ares is a sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy, fans want to see returning cast members including Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Cillian Murphy. There has been no official word on whether or not they were involved. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Jeff Bridges, who played the lead role in the 1982 picture Tron.

Given the lack of information concerning the sequel, it is challenging to speculate on Evan Peters’ character in Tron: Ares. Although there were several intriguing character revelations in the prior report, none of them seemed to directly correlate with Peters’ casting in Tron: Ares. Peters could be taking over for Cillian Murphy, who appeared as Edward Dillinger Jr. in Tron: Legacy without receiving any screen credit. Murphy may be unavailable to work on Tron 3 when production begins the month after its July release because of his obligations to promote his next feature Oppenheimer. The fact that Murphy is now a major star may also make him difficult to work with.

Overall, fans’ anticipation in Tron: Ares has been boosted by the addition of Evan Peters to the cast. Filming for the film is expected to begin soon, so fans will hopefully learn more about the film’s narrative and potential new cast members.
