Cartoons like Bradley Cooper’s voice work as Rocket the talking raccoon in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films have long been a hit with kids. However, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the latest edition in the saga, may be difficult to watch for animal-loving fans of all ages. The film digs into Rocket’s terrible history, revealing how the High Evolutionary, a cruel and vicious monster, experimented on and cybernetically constructed him. Rocket’s terrible recollections indicate that he was made by someone who didn’t care about him, and the film brings attention to the serious problem of animal abuse and experimentation. Parents may want to sit with their kids and see the more unpleasant moments with them and be there to answer questions later because of how explicit they are. Although “Vol. 3” may be too disturbing for some adults to see, it serves an important purpose and is highly recommended for all animal rights advocates. The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has hailed the film as “the best animal rights film of the year,” praising filmmaker James Gunn for humanizing the millions of defenseless animals who suffer at the hands of scientific inquiry. Gunn has shown us via Rocket’s journey that having empathy for all sentient beings improves our quality of life. The film’s message of more empathy and respect towards animals may be difficult to take in, but it’s a vital one.
