James Gunn Reveals Superman’s Origin Won’t Take Center Stage in “Legacy”

James Gunn Reveals Superman's Origin

In a recent interaction on Threads, Superman: Legacy writer-director, James Gunn has shared insights into the upcoming cinematic outing for the Man of Steel.

Notably, Gunn disclosed that not one of the movies might be committed to Superman’s beginning tale. This aligns with Gunn’s previous declaration on Bluesky, where he expressed “I think we’ve seen his origin enough in film at this time!”

DC Studios co-president and co-CEO Peter Safran clarified that “Legacy” isn’t an origin story but will explore “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

Describing Superman as a symbol of truth, justice, and the American way, Safran highlighted the character’s “kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”

While plot details for “Legacy” remain under wraps, Gunn assured fans that the film won’t be a comedy. He acknowledged the challenge of working with a character as iconic as Superman, emphasizing that the film won’t “have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”

Addressing the influence of Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman, Gunn reflected on how to make the concept of a flying superhero feel real. He noted that while “Legacy” is different, he draws inspiration from “what [director Richard] Donner did with Superman, and what Christopher Reeve did with Superman, and Margot Kidder, who’s fantastic in the movie. She’s really the heart of it in a lot of ways.”

Adding to the insights, Lois Lane actor Rachel Brosnahan discussed the project’s leading man, David Corenswet, suggesting that their take on Superman will incorporate a sense of humour. Brosnahan expressed ” David and I are both excited to put our own spin on things and honor the material we love so much.”

Superman: Legacy is set to soar into theatres on 11th July 2025 with a fresh perspective on the iconic superhero without delving into his origin story.
