In response to Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial jokes about Irish people at the Oscars, Liam Neeson called them “somewhat racist.” The comedian has faced criticism for his jokes about Irish people during his hosting of the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony, which was attended by a record number of Irish nominees.

Although the actor from Co Antrim was not present at the ceremony, he expressed his opinion on the matter in an interview with The Times. “I heard he was being a bit racist. Jokes about Irish fighting, drinking, and all that. I don’t know what to say,” Neeson said.

During his opening monologue, Kimmel initiated the jokes by stating, “It was some year for diversity and inclusion. We have nominees from every corner of Dublin. Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage just went way up.”

While Neeson did not discuss his own racism controversy in the interview, he did talk about his career, as he prepares to star in his 100th movie and reaches the milestone age of 70. His newest film, Marlowe, which is part of his extensive catalogue, features him in an action role as Raymond Chandler’s iconic detective Philip Marlowe, who is hired to find heiress Clare Cavendish’s (played by Diane Kruger) missing former lover.
