New details about the death of actor and Friends star Matthew Perry are out. The Coroner’s report is now in. ABC’s Matt Gutman has details on what the medical examiner found in Perry’s system tonight.

An autopsy revealed the 54-year-old Friends star, Matthew Perry, died of the acute effects of the drug ketamine after losing consciousness and likely slipping under the water in his hot tub, according to the medical examiner. Perry was reported to be receiving ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety, with the last treatment a week and a half before his death.

However, the investigation concluded the ketamine in his system could not have been from that infusion therapy because the drug typically clears the system in a few hours.

ketamine is a common anesthetic and is also legally used for treatment-resistant depression, but it can also be used as a recreational drug with euphoric and psychedelic effects.

It’s very dangerous when you use it in, um, the setting where, you know, he was in a body of water when you’re in a hot tub, or if you’re in a pool or something like that, because you become so sedated.

The medical examiner noted that Matthew Perry had heart disease and was also using a drug to combat opioid use disorder, but ultimately, he concluded that Perry died of an accident.
