National Treasure, featuring Nicolas Cage is one of the hit action-adventure masterpieces. With over 16 years of hiatus since the last pulse-pounding installment, this franchise has left audiences on the edge of their seats. The initial two films, unleashed in 2004 and 2007, became blockbusters, amassing an extraordinary $800 million worldwide. Now fans are eagerly waiting for the movie’s third sequel.
The franchise continued its legacy through the Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History. However, the absence of Cage’s iconic figurehead left fans yearning for the big-screen return of the beloved character.
Since 2008, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been meticulously crafting the foundation for the highly anticipated National Treasure 3. Despite no official release date, the prospect of a third film is still alive. The script for the threequel saw its inception in 2010, undergoing multiple rewrites in 2016 and 2018. In January 2020, a significant breakthrough occurred as Chris Bremner, known for his work on Bad Boys for Life, was enlisted for a page-one rewrite.
In a May 2020 interview with Collider, Bruckheimer shared insights, revealing active development for both a streaming version and a big-screen adaptation. The Disney+ version features a younger cast while maintaining the essence of the original concept. However, the theatrical release is set to reunite the same iconic cast.
Despite initial enthusiasm, Disney delayed the third film as they focused on launching the streaming series. Unfortunately, the Disney+ venture was short-lived, canceled after one season, leaving fans with lingering anticipation for National Treasure 3.
Bruckheimer’s latest update hints at progress, stating,
"Let's hope we're working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it's really good. So I think we'll get it to him shortly."
Despite no official confirmation from Bruckheimer, Disney, or Cage, eager fans are anticipating an update on the film.
While details about the cast of National Treasure 3 remain undisclosed, Bruckheimer has emphasized a desire to move forward with the original cast. In an August 2022 interview with E! News, Bruckheimer revealed ongoing developments for both a new cast and the original, solidifying the movie’s ongoing status.
As scripts were sent to Cage for approval as late as 2022, the return of Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates seems highly probable. Justin Bartha, who played Riley Poole, expressed optimism, indicating ongoing fan demand for a third movie. Other familiar faces like Harvey Keitel and Jon Voight are expected to return, along with a potential comeback for Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase.
