It’s no mystery that Disney has lately been reducing expenses, which has led to the sad loss of many jobs. However, this reduction has impacted more than just ordinary employees. Ike Perlmutter, head of Marvel Entertainment, was recently let go as Disney mulls incorporating Marvel into its existing merchandising operations. Despite Marvel’s recent successes with its film releases, many think that the MCU’s mistakes can be traced back to Perlmutter’s contentious leadership. It was common knowledge that Perlmutter was a heartless capitalist who put money before all else. In 1997, when Marvel was on the verge of insolvency, he took drastic steps to reduce costs and made arbitrary decisions that ultimately saved the company. Even after Disney bought Marvel, Perlmutter was still involved in every decision. In 2015, stolen emails exposed his misogynistic, homophobic, and prejudiced beliefs, further damaging his image and making it difficult for Marvel to produce certain kinds of films. When it came to films starring female or non-white protagonists, he frequently clashed with Kevin Feige. Due to his pessimism, Perlmutter vetoed Marvel movies like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow. This clarifies the strange release schedules for Captain Marvel and Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, made her debut in an extended sequence following the titles of Avengers: Infinity War, but her standalone feature didn’t arrive until right before the massive events of Avengers: Endgame. Black Widow’s feature also premiered at the height of the epidemic that shut down the film industry, two years after her character’s demise in Endgame. The exit of Perlmutter has raised expectations for the MCU’s future. The business needs new, more open-minded leadership and a clean slate. The recent layoffs have been a tough time for everyone involved, but we can only hope that with this shift comes improved prospects and a brighter future.
