The shocking turn of events in the season 3 finale of The Mandalorian involving the cherished Darksaber shocked many. To defend her home world and her people, Bo-Katan Kryze engages Moff Gideon in a saber duel. But Gideon’s new Mandalorian-inspired armor proves too powerful, and he deliberately destroys the Darksaber, breaking one of the Mandalorian’s oldest traditions in the process.

Gideon’s goal in destroying the saber is revealed to be to prevent the Darksaber from falling into the wrong hands. He requested its surrender several times over the season, but Bo-Katan, wise from experience, is holding firm. Gideon, in a final act of desperation, destroys the sword in the mistaken belief that he is also destroying the commander of the Mandalorians.

The Mandalorians have always known the Darksaber to be a devastating weapon. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Pre Vizsla once declared, “only the strongest shall rule.” Generations of Mandalorians have died in bloody battles over who would get to wield the sword and show their superiority because of this belief. In the third season of The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan realizes the Darksaber is dividing the Mandalorian people and begins to feel bad about it.

As a side effect, Gideon’s destruction of the Darksaber demonstrates that the Mandalorian clans do not need the blade to unify and defeat their adversaries. Despite losing the saber, they work together to vanquish Gideon’s Imperial Remnant on Mandalore. The Mandalorians have the chance to create a society based on honor and mutual respect now that there is no longer a physical item determining who reigns. Despite Gideon’s best intentions, the destruction of the Darksaber actually ushers in a more prosperous future for the people of Mandalore.
