Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon to Debut in 70mm Theaters Ahead of Netflix Streaming

Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated sci-fi epic Rebel Moon will have a limited theatrical release in 70mm format before it lands on Netflix for streaming. The movie will be shown in select theaters from December 15 to December 21.

These screenings will take place at iconic venues including the Prince Charles Cinema in London, the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, the Paris Theater in New York, and the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles.

Netflix which owns the latter two theaters will make Rebel Moon available for streaming on December 22.

Rebel Moon’s Origins and Plot

Initially conceived as a Star Wars project Rebel Moon eventually took shape as a standalone production by Zack Snyder. The film draws inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s works and Heavy Metal magazine.

Rebel Moon’s story revolves around Kora portrayed by Sofia Boutella who leads a diverse group of warriors from various corners of the galaxy in a battle against an oppressive empire.

The ensemble cast features renowned actors such as Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Staz Nair, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Fra Free and the legendary Anthony Hopkins.

Zack Snyder co-wrote the script with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten.

Snyder has ambitious plans for Rebel Moon envisioning a cinematic universe with multiple movies and supplementary content that will enrich the galactic lore.

The first installment has been divided into two parts with the first titled “A Child of Fire” set to be released in 2023 and its sequel “The Scargiver” scheduled for the following year.

Zack Snyder is excited about the scale of the project and Netflix’s eagerness to explore its vast potential.

Comprehensive Universe-building

Snyder has already announced a prequel comic series “House of the Bloodaxe” set to be released by Titan Comics in January 2024. This series will delve into the story of siblings Darrian and Devra Bloodaxe portrayed by Ray Fisher and Cleopatra Coleman in the film.

Additionally, there are plans for an animated series and a video game all set before the events of the movie expanding the rich mythology of Rebel Moon.

Although a tabletop RPG was in development its future is uncertain due to a legal dispute between the publisher Evil Genius Games and Netflix.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will make its debut in select 70mm theaters on December 15 before being available for streaming on Netflix starting December 22.
